Another snag in the plan

It’s called “going on a trip to the cabin with my family and praying that the VCR will record properly on Thursday evening.” Said snag will also delay the Episode 1 review, but given that I’ll be at the cabin, it’s quite possible that you’ll be stressing out about it a lot more than me. If it helps at all, I’ll take an extra nap this weekend for your benefit. No need to thank me—just doing what I can to help out.

Well, you’ll miss out.

And wouldn’t you know it, I did. Thankfully, they’ll be replaying the first episode of this season’s Beauty and the Geek again on Thursday, so you’ll have to wait until then for a vaguely amusing review based on what the editors show us plus my personal biases.

I think my reason for missing most of the show is legit: I was having dinner with some family members to celebrate my grandma’s 90th birthday. We decided to meet at 6:00, which meant I missed the last (retelevised) part of the USA v. Nigeria game in the Women’s World Cup; thankfully, the team won 1-0 without me and took the top seed in Group B. “USA! USA! USA!”

. . .

Anyway! Because the restaurant we went to was a buffet and I went back for thirds—salad, main course, ice cream… plus a few cookies and a breadstick for good measure—it took a while to finish and I got home with about 20 minutes of Beauty and the Geek remaining. Damn…

Aside from all that, happy 90th birthday, Grandma! Hope you can make it back for a second plate on your 100th, too.

I was on the front page for a few hours…

Or maybe more than a few hours. I’m not sure how often The Gate moves from story to story on its main page, but there was a day when I could go to the site and there it was: a picture of me in my sorta-almost-glory that people could bask in. And it wasn’t even because I’d been arrested this time.

Nope, the article was an “interview” that I did with a writer for the website, which entailed his sending me some questions, my responding to them and him deciding what to include. If you’d like to take a look, here’s the link plus the text inside for when the link disappears (which could be in another few hours…). Continue reading “I was on the front page for a few hours…”

And I thought they were competing networks…

It started with a brief surge of “Friend Request” notices from Myspace. The same thing happened every time another Beauty and the Geek marathon ends up on the air. I didn’t realize it was on the air this time, but no biggie. A couple more seconds of my fifteen minutes of fame, right? But then I got a message from someone saying that she saw it on VH1.

“WHAT?!”

MTV bought the rights to the show—they were the ones playing the marathons to whet people’s appetites for Season 3 and kept playing them and playing them and playing them… But if MTV owned the rights to the show, how the hell did VH1 get permission from them to play the same marathons (and play them and play them…)?

I did a very brief amount of research using Google by typing in “VH1 MTV” and found the MTV website in England—it had a page specifically devoted to VH1. That’s right, kids, our worst fears have come to pass: there’s a monopoly on music videos on TV. I’ll never look at those undead zombies dancing around to “Thriller” the same way again…
